For this list, we’ve chosen the best and brightest music composers who take us on a musical journey from the first note we hear. We’ve excluded composers such as Hans Zimmer and Gustavo Santaolalla who, despite working on “Crysis 2” and “The Last of Us” respectively, are mostly regarded as movie composers – plus they’ve really only done one game a piece.

  • For me I think Koji Kondo it's the best! I mean, maybe because I am a huge Zelda fan… but it's amazing. However, I think we should also make a Top 10 composers for Indie Games!

  • Akira Yamaoka should’ve at least gotten an honorable mention. He’s an awesome composer. Disappointed.

  • hmmm? hans zimmer does so much more music than that for games.
most games I own has at least 1 music piece from zimmer. so not having him on the list when he's basically one of the absolute best is clean out idiotic

  • Why is David Wise just as honorable mention?

Felipe Echeverría July 1, 2020 6:55 am Reply
  • The fact that David Wise is not #2 on this list showcases how little research you did here. Video game music would have taken ages to evolve without his enormous contributions to the technology behind the music. Donkey Kong Country was one of the biggest technological breakthroughs in video game history.

  • I know they wouldn't have made the list, but on my own personal list I'd add two names: Jason Hayes and Junichi Masuda. Jason Hayes composed the World of Warcraft soundtrack, and Junichi Masuda is arguably the main guy behind Pokémon's music.

  • You really should have elaborated on Jeremy Soule doing music for Humongous Entertainment. He did pretty much the best music for the main games, from PuttPutt to Freddi Fish and Pajama Sam to Spy Fox.

  • I actually agree with most of this list but am disappointed that Grant Kirkhope wasn't even an honorable mention. He would be in my personal top 5 but to each his own. Narrowing down to just 10 is a huge undertaking and I found myself surprisingly agreeing with this list.
