  • Just to say that they did say 'Attempt to Fall Back' in the stratagem – there MIGHT be some sort of test to do so now, which would also be a big change. Sorry, should have mentioned in the video!

  • As a bug player, I’m slightly salty. But there is still the option to spend a Cp to cut them down. Especially for fat units of genestealers.

  • Ultra marines won’t get affected by this unless their chapter tactic changes?

  • Stupidest thing ever added to the game.

  • Tri pointing is such a terrible rule. All it does is waste time while I carefully position every model in such a way where it can't happen. Its essentially blast templates all over again.

  • This sounds like a great change for the game overall.

  • I’m learning so much about 8th edition tactics from things that have changed in 9th 😂 I play Blood Angels and never bothered tripointing

  • looks terrible for tanks though, if my russ is surrounded but is on full health, and I roll the dice and roll a 1, I have now got a destroyed russ. It seems like its still viable tactic to surround tanks with grots, as even shooting in close combat won't really help. Why can't i just run them over, im using a bloody tank!

  • Basically "strategem" now means "stop your opponent using Strategy"

  • If an opponent uses Desperate breakout, can someone use the melee attack on fallback stratagem to potentially kill even more model on retreat?

Toasty Baps June 28, 2020 12:31 am Reply
  • That's an old tactic, back in 2nd edition you could leave hand to hand but had to roll an opposing initiative rolls if the attacker wins they get a free swing at your unit.
So now if you assault something you need to kill it before they can retaliate.

  • Compared with Range, melee was way harder to pull off.
And now is geting nerf after nerf 🙁

Somebody at GW seems to not like geting murdered by melee armies.

  • So far, of all the things I like about the changes in 9th, this is by far the one I am most excited about – and that’s coming from a BA player! It’s going to force me to become a better general rather than being able to guarantee benefiting from a rules ‘exploit’ which detracts from the common sense/cinematics of the Wargame.

  • So I guess from what I read on it it appears that ultramarines still can't shoot after falling back with a minus one hit.. if that is so then that sucks… That is what ultramarines chapter trait is

  • great… more stratagems….
cmon GW, this isn't how to improve the game!

  • When I first read this preview I was under the impression that this was replacing the Fall Back move. I'm not sure why I thought that but I'm glad there's other takes on it.

  • Wonderful, let's just remove all the skill part of the game. Why not?

    Königstiger June 28, 2020 12:31 am Reply
  • IMO, you talk way too long. IMO, you should cover the rules and when to use them in a general situation. You go on and on and on. But that's just me.

  • I count 6 or 7 core stratagems shwon, ratehr than 5. The original three, Counter offensive, Command Reroll and Insane Bravery. We have been shown Fire Overwatch, Cut Them Down and Desperate Breakout. THere is also Prepared Positions already as a core stratagem, but that has not received confirmation.

  • meh this seems VERY situational. Does give the ability to escape but it still shuts down the unit and if you encircle that enemy unit with a wider 'ring' there can be no where to fall back to….so you wouldnt even bother. 9th is not so melee friendly as many people think. BRING BACK SWEEPING ADVANCE!

  • Playing a full range of armies, from gunline tau, hord orks, Iron Hands to melee Blood Angels, the selection of rules GW have chosen to let us see make me rather nervous for the future of my Blood Angels. Deffinitly feels like bigger gains for my shooting lists, with some of the careful tactics needed to counter a good melee player now a fair bit easier, especially with something like a strat that covers ya arse when you do let your opponent lock you in combat for no skill at all. I can also see overwatch having the potential of being more painful now as well. Currently, other than spacific units, most overwatch is just an irritant, now your opponent is going to have chances of doubly effective overwatch from the unit that is going to be able to do the more significant damage to a more important target.

Thanks to hearing from play testers who's opinions I trust, I have faith that 9th is going to be something special, I just feel the limited release of rules has noticeably biased one side of the game and a more careful selection of the order of rull release could have left every style of player excited about there style of play getting the love, I am sure the love is there really.

  • That's neat and all but it should be pay 2 command points to be able to shoot into your own units locked in combat, 1s hit your guys doing mortals.

    Trevak D'hal June 28, 2020 12:31 am Reply
  • My first thought was drop pods, and other stationary models. Will they be able to pay CP to commit suicide instead of being stuck in combat. Depends if they can attempt to fall back with a 0" move I guess

George Hutley June 28, 2020 12:31 am Reply
  • So where it says the unit cannot do anything further that turn, shoot, move, psych etc…is it revealed yet if auras are affected? Eg, if a SM captain does this to break out of a tripoint and fall back, can his allies within 6" RR1s?

james puliin June 28, 2020 12:31 am Reply
  • What are the five strats up to now then ?

Jay Fitzy June 28, 2020 12:31 am Reply
  • The stratagem allows a friendly unit to fall back at the cost of possibly losing some models
The fact that it allows them to fall back and the unit doing so will fulfil the requirement for the Cut Them Down stratagem possibly causing even more losses, especially when they're falling back from a horde unit

  • RIP genestealers … rip my friends 🙁

Angus Chalmers June 28, 2020 12:31 am Reply
  • I'm not sure tri pointing is that gamey. Surrounding a unit so it can't retreat sounds like a reasonable thing to do to me.

    namewastaken360 June 28, 2020 12:31 am Reply
  • I think if gw designed melee armies better we wouldnt need to tri point in order to get by

Although this strat i think could be beaten by positioning your models in such a way that even if your opponent fell back theyd still end within 1 inch of you no matter what

Harrison Saynor June 28, 2020 12:31 am Reply
  • More assault army nerfs. I really hope points changes reflect this.

  • Did I see a 0CP stratagem at then end of that adeptus mechanicus faction focus? 0CP strats aren't a thing in 8th right??
