I have upgraded to macOS High Sierra when the first beta came out and I was having some issues with my storage. So then I wanted to do a Clean installation of the macOS High Sierra on your MacMini. So for the clean installation, I have backed up my files to my HDD and Erased my Mac hard drive to perform the clean installation. So while installing I got this error – ‘Could not create a preboot volume for APFS install’. I check out the internet for its solution but i couldn’t find anything easy, the things I food was very complicated and didn’t work for me. So then i tried to fix the problem by doing a lot of things and eventually found an easy solution for it. So over here, I am going to tell you exactly how easily you can fix this error.

How to fix ‘Could not create a preboot volume for APFS install’

First of all, I created a bootable USB of MacOS High Sierra installation using Terminal. And started the clean installation process.

So I Erased my Mac Hard disk to the new APFS format via Disk Utility. But then when I was installing the macOS High Sierra then after few minutes I got the error that “Could not create a preboot volume for APFS install‘ while installing macOS High Sierra. So my installation stopped. And as i have already Erased my Mac HD were I had the macOS installed so I was stuck. So either I had to go back to macOS Sierra or fix this issue to continue with the installation. I choose to go for macOS High Sierra by fixing this prob. So here is how you can fix it:

Step 1: Quit your installation of macOS High Sierra / Open up the Disk Unity.

Step 2: Now on the ” Internal ” of the Erase Section, Select your Main Mac Hard Drive.

Step 3: Now Click on Erase and Format your hard drive to ” Mac OS Extended (Journaled) ” as the following image.

Step 4: Now once it’s done. Then quit the Disk Utility and go and start the macOS High Sierra installation process again.

Step 5: Now start the installation and you will be getting this screen, now select ” Upgrade ‘macOS High Sierra’ to APFS ” and it will work all fine. Your installation won’t have any error. This is how you can fix the error ‘Could not create a preboot volume for APFS install’ while installing macOS High Sierra.

If you try to Erase your Mac HD to APFS format at the beginning then it won’t work. So just follow my steps here and you will be able to clean install the macOS High Sierra on your Mac. Cheers.
