Apple announces tvOS, a new dedicated OS for Apple TV

At its ‘Hey Siri’ event today, Apple unveiled that the Apple TV will be running on tvOS. This new OS for the Apple TV is based on iOS, so it offers all the features present on the latter, though it has been optimised for the big screen.

The new OS will feature the same development tools as iOS and OS X: XCode. It also supports Metal, and features Game Center integration.

Apple has already worked with some prominent developers behind the scenes to design some apps specially for tvOS, including Netflix, HBO Now, Hulu, Airbnb, and more. Apple also demoed a new game called “Beats Sports” exclusively for Apple TV. The game will be available on the tvOS App Store on the same day the Apple TV 4 goes on sale. Apple is about to release the iOS 9 GM and WatchOS 2 today.
