The video was uploaded to the accessory maker’s website in January, and shows an iPhone 6 getting sent 101,000 feet into the stratosphere above Earth. Temperatures dropped to negative 79 degrees Fahrenheit, and the device was bashed with winds that reached upwards of 70 miles per hour. While the device probably made it through the rough winds, the cold weather eventually made the device shut off and, ultimately, freeze.
The fact that they sent the iPhone 6 into the stratosphere included a large weather balloon, along with a couple of GoPro cameras attached to showcase the whole event. They included a GSP locator, too, just to make sure they could keep tabs on the whole thing. Upon its descent, Urban Armor Gear says the whole rig was subjected to 150 RPM rotation speeds.
When it eventually landed, the iPhone remained unscathed, while the rest of the show was broken to pieces.
“Our cases already meet military drop-test standards, but now we can officially say that they are space tested as well,” said Steve Armstrong, co-founder of Urban Armor Gear. “The fact that the iPhone survived its space adventure and returned fully functioning showcases our commitment in providing our customers world-class, or in this case out of this world, protection for their premium devices.“
